Every now and then some fuckwit reblogs my ‘op is a terf’ brigade post to whinge about how mean I am and how radfems deserve to be blacklisted because…reasons.
Whenever I try to explain to them that they are uninformed about what is going on it is like talking to a brickwall. They never get past the ‘ur a terf and terfs r bad so u deserve to be harassed whenever you make a post’ stage (even when they agree with a lot of what we write).
They never stop to think about why radfems are being blacklisted and what this says about transactivism. They never stop to consider the reasons radfems oppose/are critical of transgenderism and trans activism.
Do any radfems have any thoughts on this?
I think a lot of this anti-TERF stuff is very similar to McCarthyism in that biased information is presented as fact by very powerful and assumedly trustworthy people.
If there’s a house committee about it, if the president supports it, people are going to believe it.
These lies are presented by these kinds of people because, in the end, the perpetuation of gender roles benefits the ruling class. So many people, even many people in LGBT communities, buy into this, because they hear it from “trustworthy” sources. Our modern feminist idols are Laverne Cox and Emma Watson.
People look up to the ruling class, and it’s considered radical now. When people look up to those who benefit from our exploitation, the bourgeoisie will always use their power as influencers to argue that we should want our own oppression. It becomes fashionable and “empowering” to give in to these stereotypes.
Anyway, I think it has a lot to do with mass media. When the Internet came along, activist spaces were infiltrated by the ruling class. The popularization of feminism allowed mass media and powerful people to set our agenda and beliefs as activists.
Why people dont question all of this, is strange. I sometimes blame it on lack of education, the culture of accepting everything as fact. But I think in the end most people are so hypnotized by popular culture that they don’t want to look outside of it and question it.
Liberalism makes people think that progress is an end in itself, that just by letting women vote and wear pants we are liberated. People think they’re being activists when they’re just slaves to ideology. So I guess ultimately popular culture and media makes people think that they’re helping themselves by making small progress in tag-line politics. And so they are willing to listen when their leaders make sweeping claims about what a woman is and what feminism is.
Awesome commentary.
Thank you.
