Today a 30 year old man from from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada uploaded a video titled “high school girl” to Fetlife (a social networking side for people with a fetish or interests in kink or BDSM) where he sexually abuses a drunken high school girl (which is a grounds for consent violation). It also seems extremely likely that this video was not posted on the website with her consent either (another ground for a consent violation). I don’t support Fetlife, so I (fortunately) couldn’t watch the video, but the comment section makes it clear that this young girl is VERY intoxicated (slurring speech, eyes rolling into the back of her head etc.). As well as the fact that she’s a high school student. Her age is guessed between 16 and 18 years old (with debate going on wether she just passed the 18 year old mark). The age of consent in Canada is 16, however: it is 18 in case of “prostitution, pornography or in a relationship of authority, trust or dependency.” Age difference and difference in power are mentioned as well.
But regardless of her age: this is an example of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation, as well as what we today classify under the term “revenge porn”. This filmed abuse made it into the Kinky & Popular section on Fetlife, meaning it is a popular video. I don’t know if the popularity is because she is so young or because a lot of people are commenting to call the perpetrator out. I sincerely hope the latter.
Fetlife has a long track record of failing survivors of sexual abuse (naming abusers is forbidden by the TOS), as has the kink community in general. It is important that the world knows what happens before Fetlife takes the video down, bans this rapist and we never hear from it again, or perhaps on the news one day, after a few more victims. As a long time member of the kink community I want to speak up and hold perpetrators like this man accountable. When are we going to get justice? I don’t care about the morality of doxxing. The perpetrator tries to defend himself by denying the seriousness of his crime and claiming the girl just passed the age of 18. This indicates that the person behind the profile is not a fake. Also: most fakes would probably not use pictures of such a mediocre-looking man. 😉
So… tumblr, make me proud. If nobody acts in instances of injustice, I guess we have to get the justice ourselves.
