When interviewing Hayao Miyazaki, Roger Ebert told the director that he loved the “gratuious motions” in his films, when instead of every moment being dictated by the story, sometimes people would just take a pause and chill. Miyazaki says they have a word for that in japanese: Ma, an intentional emptiness.
Ma is a pause; moments when nothing special actually happens and there’s no development of the plot, just a notion of time, space and who they are, a moment of contemplation. The kanji for Ma ( 間 ) is the union of two other kanji: gate (門 • もん) and sun (日 • ひ). With this union, Ma can be understood as an open door – a gap – from wich the sun light can be seen, an absence that allows something to manifest through it.
