My heart is breaking, an acquaintance of mine posted on snapchat, asking for people to stop calling her a girl, because “I’ve always hated being one.” This is what misogyny and our woman-hating society does to teenage girls. It makes us hate being girls so much that we want to reject ourselves and become “nonbinary”. That because we don’t dress femininely enough to satisfy patriarchy’s standards, we must hate and revile our sex so much that we want to reject ourselves all together. Misogyny makes women hate ourselves so much that we feel uncomfortable where we should feel the safest: in our own bodies.
I dealt with this when I was younger. Can only hope she can overcome it and learn to love herself. I know it’s hard for most girls, especially if they are young.
I’d like to add though that most of those snarky comments are coming from males. Males who no doubt commit misogynistic acts, whether intentional or not. Men who watch porn that is not only 10x worse than anything that EL James has written but had to be acted out by REAL women.
Don’t pretend like these men are women loving heroes. They’re just having fun attacking a woman since they got the opportunity.
I agree porn has done far more damage than 50 shades. Pretty much everything they say also applies to porn so they could do this against pornographers if they wanted to. It would be more efficient to give pornographers a hard time. Somehow I don’t think these twitter activists would do that. It is much easier to blame women for internalising misogyny instead of going after the purveyors of misogyny.
Truthfully, I’ve learned a lot about how women see really themselves today. The posts about how Bruce Jenner ‘looks better than me,’ ‘is more a woman than I am,’ ‘is prettier than I am,’ they break my heart. Please ladies, love yourselves and don’t compare yourselves to a 60 year old man with who spent his whole life as a privileged male and thought a boob job and a name change would make him better than you.
Bruce Jenner is a straight, white, republican male who does not give two shits about women and for all I care is staging a publicity stunt (fake breasts can also be made with prosthetics and celebrities will lie to get away with anything).
dont teach little girls to hate other little girls. dont tell them other girls are mean and catty and gossip and talk behind their backs. dont tell them girls will steal their boyfriends and take all the blame off the boys who leave. dont tell them boys are better for any reason. dont teach lil girls to hate lil girls because they’ll grow into women who hate other women and there’s enough people in the world who hate women, thanks

Notice how she quoted another woman sucking up to bruce jenner and then still insulted other women. How brainwashed do you have to be to say shit like this?
When you begin to see feminism on an individual level, you negate the importance of feminism fighting for women as a whole. Women don’t have to like feminism. But trying to end oppression for all women should not be stopped because a few like wearing makeup. If patriarchy was abolished, men and women could wear makeup and we would be SURE they weren’t doing it due to misogynistic socialization.
A woman’s love of porn does not override the necessity of abolishing to save women. A woman’s love of makeup does not override the importance of ridding the pressure/advertisement/misogyny within the industry. A woman’s love of BDSM does not negate how BDSM blatantly uses misogyny as sexual “preferences”.
What we like on an individual level is ultimately shaped by our socialization. It’s not natural for women to like makeup, it’s something we were taught to do. It’s not natural for men to hate women, it’s what they were taught to do. It’s all about socialization and how we can stop misogyny within that. That is the root of the cause, but we must help the women already suffered by this socialization before we can help future girls who will be socialized the same if something doesn’t change.

This is what transgenderism does to women and their identities. It supports the idea that the more time and effort that a person puts into their appearance, the more of a woman they are.
Woman doesn’t come in degrees. It isn’t conditional on the use of nailpolish, hair straighteners, and make up.
Women can present as masculinely or femininely as they like and they are still women. They are still whole women. A butch lesbian is no less of a woman than a feminine presenting heterosexual woman.
It is internalised misogyny to think that a man is more of a woman than you because he paints his nails and does his hair.
Women are adult, female, humans.
This is actually really sad. Their self effacing behaviour is actually something women are socialised into. So if they are measuring women but how feminine they are all these women are ‘more of a woman‘ than bruce jenner. Jenner does not look like a woman and he is getting praise for doing nothing so he is still being treated like a man.
