Burqas/chathari shouldn’t be used in any images of “solidarity” or tools for liberation or whatever, holy fucking shit. They exist due to pure misogyny. How the fuck you can see a cloth covering everything, even the eyes with only a little mesh to see out of, with no sleeves for arms so you can essentially do nothing in them without revealing parts of your body, which the burqa is supposed to be covering and oh if you’ve ever lived in a place where the burqa was enforced- Afghanistan under the Taliban- local men will have no qualms beating you with sticks if so much as your ankle is revealed, literally. They aren’t some quirky fun thing and the only statement you’re making when you not just defend it, but use it with no qualms to represent Muslims and Islam for your bullshit fucking point is that you don’t see it as a misogynistic invention, which it is.

Ayatollah Yousef Tabatabai, a staunch conservative & leader of Friday prayers in Isfahan, Iran, attributes the drying up of Isfahan’s Zayendeh river to women who take selfies without hijab near the river.
“So apparently, in addition to having once been accused of causing eathquakes in Iran – in reference to the remarks of another cleric, Kazen Sedigi, who once uttered “many women who do not dress modestly spread adultery in society & this gives rise to earthquakes.” – we women are now being blamed for another natural disaster. It seems that the rulers of Iran are intent on blaming their own mismanagement & incompetence on women.” – My Stealthy Freedom
PUBLIC DEBATE: ISLAM OR FEMINISM: Which One Truly Liberates Women? Julie Bindel vs Zara Faris
Worth watching.
Look through this again I’ve noticed how she uses the same men’s rights activist talking points in regards to custody, rape, domestic violence…funny that.
PUBLIC DEBATE: ISLAM OR FEMINISM: Which One Truly Liberates Women? Julie Bindel vs Zara Faris
Hijab is never a choice
Hijab is a gender role assigned to females born in Muslim families and not conforming to it has consequences. Sometimes, these
consequences are deadly. Addressing hijab using choice rhetoric “it’s only bad if it’s forced” is very damaging, dishonest and out of touch with reality. It gives the illusion that Muslim raised women are actually given choices or are able to make a choice free from social and religious pressure. It also makes it a personal problem unique to those who are vocal about being unhappy conforming to this gender role. Because under that line of thinking, hijab is not a problem for the millions of women who put on a smile while wearing it. It’s only a problem for me because my family didn’t respect my wishes. because somehow my family is exempt from social pressure created by religious doctrine to force me to wear hijab and they’re just uniquely bad people who arbitrarily decided to control my body unlike every other Muslim family. Therefore, any criticism of hijab as a misogynistic harmful practice will be shut down with “i’m happy with my hijab. If you’re not, take it up with your strict family and leave Islam and Muslims out of it.” Again, personalizing a social issue. Sadly, the majority think that’s a legitimate response and I am the one threatening women’s liberty by criticizing their “choice” to wear hijab. Isn’t that fascinating!
Some might say what about hijabi women who converted to Islam or what about hijabi women in liberal families that have non hijabi sisters or mothers, they certainly had choices. Well, what about them? They’re the privileged minority and even then it’s not really a choice because Islam itself doesn’t give women choices. They either wear hijab/niqab/be modest (depending on the kind of Islamic doctrine they were subjected to) or they’re sinful and could go to hell. Does that look like a choice to you?
I’m fully aware some women are happy with their hijab but being happy doing what you’re told doesn’t make doing so a choice.
I look forward to the day when self proclaimed feminists have the courage to stand up against the shaming and sexualizing of Muslim raised women’s bodies and be unapologetic about it rather than being a voice used by Muslim men to oppress women under the protection of “choice” and religious liberty.
(I use “Muslim raised women” instead of “Muslim women” to include ex Muslims)
Eid Mubarak to any Muslim followers who are celebrating eid al fitr!!

Ramadaan is coming in a few short weeks, and if you’re non-Muslim you can help your Muslim followers by tagging:
-profanity
-nudity
-sexual content of any kind (gifs/text/pictures etc.)
-food (some people like it tagged, others don’t care)
-other specifics that your Muslim followers ask you to tagI’ve seen “NSFR” or not safe for ramadaan used so that’s probably a good way to get everything without using 30 different tags. thank u!!!

Reformists in Muslim countries are routinely silenced, through persecution or violence, which has been increasing over the last few decades as Islamism gains traction. Liberals are in a unique position to make a nuanced and compassionate critique of harmful conceptions of religion- a position which we are ceding. As a result, the only visible voices are those of hate-mongers from the far-right, Islamists and outright apologists. It is of the highest priority that liberals exert pressure on both groups towards positive change.

“Obviously, Islam isn’t the root of all evil… but it’s important to analyze. What we have here is a right wing in the west that believes Islam personifies evil, and a left wing that often refuses to even look into it as a source of harm. (…) It’s critical to realize that one can be a victim in one context and an oppressor in another. A Muslim man can deal with racism at work, real racism, facing career setbacks and then go home to beat his hijabi wife because he was raised in a misogynistic tradition, using the Quran’s literal verses as justification.”
