When it comes to FGM, all Islamic schools of thought agree that it is permissible and the only disagreement between them is whether it is obligatory, sunnah, or preferred. Anyone who says that it is unislamic and doesn’t have a basis in Islam is ignorant.
Mohammad referred to women and men’s genitals as the “circumcised parts” in the following hadith:
“When a man sits between the four parts (arms and legs of his wife) and the two circumcised parts meet, then ghusl is obligatory.” (Muslim 349)
He also described circumcision as fitra (natural human instincts):
“The fitrah is five things – or five things are part of the fitrah – circumcision, shaving the pubes, cutting the nails, plucking the armpit hairs, and trimming the moustache.” (Bukhari (5889) and Muslim (257))
The following hadith is disputed on but it also supports FGM:
A woman used to do circumcisions in Madina and the prophet said to her: “Do not go to the extreme in cutting; that is better for the woman and more liked by the husband.” (Abu Dawood 5271)

what calls for curiousity to me is that most ‘peaceful’ or ‘moderate’ muslims that i have come across hardly know the contents of the quran or islam itself. it’s easy to claim you’re peaceful and moderate when you are ignorant of the realities your holy book and teachings of your perfect prophet command.
Exactly , some are called moderate muslims while according to sharia they are no longer muslims e.g “muslims” who don’t pray are considered under sharia as an apostates and are asked to repent three times if they don’t comply they are killed , so i have yet to see one “moderate “ muslim who has the faintest idea about islam or even follows the bare minimum of its teachings .
these are the same ‘moderate muslims’ who advocate that it’s ‘my body, my choice’ when it comes to hijab and they are wearing colourful headscarves with their fringe or some parts of their hair showing. that is clearly not hijab. the same ‘moderate muslims’ [females] who wear jeans and trousers, advocating for peaceful islam, when clearly that is ‘being men-like’ and forbidden in islam. the same [male] ‘moderate muslims’ that wear chains and golden rings while they give out to other sisters about hijab while clearly, chains and jewelry other than silver rings are prohibited for men. the same ‘moderate muslim’ men who wear trousers sweeping the floor when clearly their trousers must end before their ankles. the same ‘moderate muslims’ who have friends of the opposite sex and interact with them often, even physically, because they are liberals and progressive, even though segregation is clearly encouraged in islam. these are the same ‘moderate muslims’ who do not even know they are breaking islamic rules and go ahead to tell the world such rules do not exist or come up with their own understanding of these said rules, their very lenient and biased understandings. but hey, what do i know. i’m just an ex muslim 🙂
It’s like Christians who’ve only read certain chapters of the New Testament who say “the bible says this….” and “the bible says that….” but don’t know that the bible contradicts itself every 5 pages! The bible is so big and so vast and each translation skews the meanings and each book was written by someone with a different experience and intention and each denomination of the church has interpreted it differently and basically if you want to find something in the bible you will. If you want to find evidence that god supports gay people, you will find it. But you will also find evidence that he condemns gay people. If you want to find evidence that god supports gender equality, you will, but you’ll also find evidence that he doesn’t. The Ten Commandments are very explicit in saying that god is against killing people, but in many chapters god commands his followers to destroy their enemies. In some parts god condemns rich people for being selfish, but in the next he blesses his followers with material wealth. Many Christians claim that god supports capitalism and wants his followers to be rich, and yet I have also seen arguments from Christians that say god supports communism. The bible, and the Quran are thick books with a lot of content spanning thousands of years, and what that content is Actually Saying is not as important as how they have Been Used (and continue to be used). Sure, liberal Christians and liberal Muslims may interpret their books as liberal and peaceful, but others do not and they use them as propaganda and will continue to do so. We must be able to critique these texts and the people who read them in order to minimise the damage they do. The fact is that Islam is used as justification for oppressing many women in middle eastern countries. The bible is used as justification to oppress many women all over the world. Defend your holy book all you want, but don’t deny the damage it has done and continues to do. Don’t deny the suffering religion has caused so many people. Spend your time actively fighting against the oppression your religion causes instead of denying that it does.
