The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of a young Muslim woman who successfully sued Abercrombie & Fitch after the clothing retailer refused to hire her because she wears a headscarf. Only one judge stood by Abercrombie’s flimsy defense.
Keep in mind that this isn’t an isolated incident. Job discrimination against people who wear religious garments is so disturbingly prevalent that it’s almost expected. I’ve had friends who have been just about overqualified for a job and have been rejected solely for their refusal tp remove the hijab. Companies, retail being one of the biggest culprits, would literally rather turn down valuable prospective employees instead of hire them and “taint their image.”
It is an anti-terrorism bill which aims to give CSIS (Canada’s spy agency) and the RCMP more power to spy, ‘disrupt’ and arrest Canadians. There are little to no checks or balances to ensure this increase in power isn’t abused.

Can you IMAGINE if black, Latin@, Native American, and/or Muslim people showed up to a protest armed like this?
Can you imagine how many police officers would have felt “threatened” and murdered protesters indiscriminately?
Can you count the number of white people and white supremacy apologists who are going to reblog this along with their myriad of excuses for why this isn’t an example of the grand hypocrisy of white supremacy?

Reformists in Muslim countries are routinely silenced, through persecution or violence, which has been increasing over the last few decades as Islamism gains traction. Liberals are in a unique position to make a nuanced and compassionate critique of harmful conceptions of religion- a position which we are ceding. As a result, the only visible voices are those of hate-mongers from the far-right, Islamists and outright apologists. It is of the highest priority that liberals exert pressure on both groups towards positive change.
