MTV Decoded | How To Stop Victim Blaming

Ever hear someone say, “Well she shouldn’t have gotten drunk?” or “Well it makes sense considering what she was wearing.” Pretty much no matter what bad thing happens to you, there’s always going to be someone that tells you that, in someway, it’s your own fault. This terrible tendency is called Victim Blaming and it happens a lot, especially to victims of sexual assault. And while there are real psychological reasons why people like to blame victims, there’s new research that suggests that there is a way to greatly reduce the tendency to victim blame. And it’s actually pretty simple. What is it? Watch the episode to find out!

Seriously though why is the prostitution debate always surrounded by women’s choices? What about men’s choice to dehumanize a woman by literally purchasing her body for his own pleasure? What about the ancient demand of ownership of our bodies? Why do those get taken out of the equation when liberal feminists talk about rape culture + patriarchy?

heaven forbid the finger be actually pointed at the problem.

Because they want to hyper focus on women while ignoring the reality of her circumstances and invisibilise the men’s actions and behaviour. Rape and abuse apologists use the same tactics when talking about abused women in general but libfems don’t call them out on it. They don’t have real loyalty to other women.

Feminism has been infiltrated and co-opted by men and their handmaidens. They recruited sex positivity cheerleaders/sex industry proponents co-opted feminist language and distorted it so that it isn’t really ours any more. It is a deliberate sleight of hand.

Basically it the same shit when misogynist males mock women saying something along the lines of ‘I thought you were a strong/independent/empowered woman can’t you handle this‘ when she is talking about men’s horrible behaviour.

Why men use prostitutes

But another of the interviewees left me feeling concerned. Darren was young, good-looking and bright; I asked him how often he thought the women he paid enjoyed the sex. “I don’t want them to get any pleasure,” he told me. “I am paying for it and it is her job to give me pleasure. If she enjoys it I would feel cheated.” I asked if he felt prostitutes were different to other women. “The fact that they’re prepared to do that job where others won’t, even when they’re skint, means there’s some capability inside them that permits them to do it and not be disgusted,” he said. He seemed full of a festering, potentially explosive misogyny.

When asked what would end prostitution, one interviewee laughed and said, “Kill all the girls.” Paul told me that it would take “all the men to be locked up”. But most of them told the researchers that they would be easily deterred if the current laws were implemented. Fines, public exposure, employers being informed, being issued with an Asbo or the risk of a criminal record would stop most of the men from continuing to pay for sex. Discovering the women were trafficked, pimped or otherwise coerced would appear not to be so effective. Almost half said they believed that most women in prostitution are victims of pimps (“the pimp does the psychological raping of the woman,” explained one). But they still continued to visit them.

This is the reason that people focus on the “agency” of prostitutes rather than the actions of men. This is the ugliness they don’t want you to see. Nobody wants you to ask why men pay women for sex, because the answer is frightening. So instead, they force us to keep asking why women become prostitutes. Men’s anonymity and freedom from judgement in this situation is the real problem, not women’s choices. Open your eyes, name the problem. Men hate women.
