I live in Colorado, as many know cannabis is legal here but voters making cannabis legal leaves the municipalities a conundrum. How do they keep newly built jails full? The answer is putting people in jail who have not been charged, people who have not been convicted of a crime and people involved in civil cases or de minimis infractions like speeding. Now of course debtors prisons were outlawed in the 19th century but they’re making return in defacto form. Arresting people for unpaid fines they can’t afford or what amounts to blackmailing people into paying civil judgements they can’t afford by putting them in jail until they come up with cash. It’s important to watch and fight against these municipalities who are making up the prison population by imprisoning people who should never have been taken into custody in the first place.

Privately run immigration detention is so violent that prisoners beg to be kept in solitary

mostlysignssomeportents:

With Obama’s federal government reducing the role of private prisons in the incarceration of Americans, companies like Corrections Corporation of America (now known as Corecivic) and GAO aggressively moved into providing detention facilities for people awaiting deportation, like the 2,000,000+ people deported under the Obama administrations.

These detention facilities were, if anything, even more cruel and inhumane than the private prisons that warehoused so many Americans. The Verge made FOIA requests to ICE for information on conditions in their privately contracted detention centers, and these documents reveal that under Obama, “life inside the facilities can be so dangerous and hostile that numerous detainees have voluntarily admitted themselves to solitary confinement just to seek refuge from the general population,” and the remaining solitary confinement cells were routinely used to punish inmates for minor infractions like “horseplay” and talking back to guards, a punishment visited indiscriminately against detainees with severe mental illness.

Solitary confinement is classed as a form of torture by the UN.

Donald Trump has reversed the Obama policy of preventing private companies from providing federal prisons. The share prices of GAO and Corecivic have increased significantly since the inauguration.

If you’re not from Australia you probably haven’t heard this but it’s very important.

Today The Guardian released a cache of files called The Nauru Files.

This contains 2,000 reports from Australia’s detention centres which detail the abuse, self harm, mental illness and many terrible things that are happening to asylum seekers who come to Australia in hope of a better life but are instead detained offshore in conditions that violate human rights.

If you do read them, even shortened versions, prepare to be disgusted and shocked.

This is physical evidence that the Australian government is sitting back while they detain children and imprison asylum seekers while subjecting them to torturous conditions and every kind of abuse.

Don’t let The Nauru Files be forgotten or covered up.

Don’t let the people in Australia’s offshore detention’s centre be forgotten.

It’s illegal here to even speak about what happens on these islands so that another country has been able to get these should really help raise these issues amongst the general public.

These files were leaked by someone involved in the system at Nauru (like, ofc) to the Guardian and since then, multiple doctors social workers etc have said “yeah we know but we couldn’t tell you” because it’s i l l e g a l for them to do so. All crimes that take place there are considered matters for the local police, so the Aus govt is washing their hands of it and saying “these are just allegations” like … The reports are horrible but this deserves a lot of attention there are 49 children in detention on Nauru living in squalor being tortured right this second
