I don’t believe women are more more likely to die from male violence than cancer. It happens a lot (too much) but it cannot possibly outweigh illness. Suicide is the biggest killer of teenage girls, not male violence.

Hmm. Looks like we were both kind of right. You’re right–suicide outranks for most, but the 2010 CDC study shows that homicide generally ranks in the Top 5.

US Females 2010:

Ages 1-4: Accident, Birth Defect, Homicide
Ages 5-9: Accident, Cancer, Birth Defect, Homicide
Ages 10-14: Accident, Cancer, Suicide, Birth Defect, Heart Disease, Homicide
Ages 15-19: Accident, Suicide, Homicide
Ages 20-24: Accident, Suicide, Cancer, Homicide
Ages 25-34: Accident, Cancer, Suicide, Heart Disease, Homicide
Ages 35-44: Homicide is ranked 9th

After here, you’re right, homicide does appear to drip off. However, as Gavin deBecker states otherwise in ‘The Gift Of Fear’ (still looking for the passage, will edit once I’ve found the exact one), I think it’s contingent on the demographic and risk grouping.

However, as you can see, from birth to 44, females are absolutely at risk. We can’t keep our bodies from going cancerous, and we can’t change birth defects, and force majeure will always be a concern–but homicide? That shouldn’t even be on the list, let alone the #3 killer of little girls ages 1-4, and 15-19.

Incidentally, you may be interested to know that according to the CDC, suicide counts for 11.9% of deaths in the age bracket 15-19. Homicide is 8.3%. Frankly, if you’re only slightly more likely to kill yourself than someone else is? That’s pretty alarming.

I wonder how many murdered girls have their deaths listed officially as “accidental” death.

I wonder how many women and girls committing suicide were driven to it by abusive men.

“Almost without fail, everybody I talked to recommended someone else that I should talk to because her story was so incredible,” Kauder Nalebuff told mic. Nalebuff has compiled dozens of astonishing first period stories into an anthology titled My Little Red Book.

That so many women willingly and eagerly shared their “forbidden” stories, she added, proves just how much “we are hungering to hear these stories. We are hungering to tell them. The very act of sharing them is political; it’s freeing.”

So I know that anon talked about a week where we focus on female stuff, and I would LOVE to be a part of that, but I was thinking…. you know about Jenner being 65? Well I wanna see more erm,idk how to say it. Women of age??? I want to see actual women talking about their experiences being of an older age!!! I have so much respect for these women and I want to see their faces!

Yeah!

I mean, I think women “of a certain age” are badasses on a grand scale.

I’d love to hear their stories, what a good idea. We could all ask our mums, aunties and grannies about their experiences.

How did they react to no-fault divorce? What was Roe v Wade like? Do they recall the first time they were harassed? How did they react?
Etc.

We could give them that platform, and I think that’d be awesome.

Let’s do this, seriously.

YES OMG! I’m so glad you’re down for this!!! My grandma is an immigrant from mexico and is so wonderful to talk to and i have some old pictures of my great grandma and aunts (all from mexico) and their experiences, as well as my beautiful mother. I wish we all had a place where we could chat about this! i was actually working on a project similar to this but i didn’t have any help so i didn’t know how to go about it bc i’ve never done anything like that.

My grandma was also raised Catholic so she’s REALLY familiar with all the types of abuse in the catholic church and growing up as a woman in central Mexico. Sorry I’m ranting but i’m so excite! those are such awesome questions too!!

Holy shit let’s get the Abuelitas onboard, yes please!

Hey roslynholcomb and daisydeadhead, I feel like you might have some advice, since I believe you’re a generation or two ahead of I am?

Any suggestions on what you’d like to see?

Let’s talk about all the *little* women’s spaces we carve out, the Saturday morning knitting circles, the kaffe klatches, the kitchen after dinner doing dishes with our aunties and grannies.

Let’s talk about the ways we can encourage girls to be strong and comfortable in their own skins.

Let’s talk about women’s land and how we can support it.

Let’s talk about blood and cramps and hot flashes and the weird in-between feeling of peri menopause when you still bleed, but now you also get night sweats, hot flashes, and so forth.

Let’s talk about our lives – with partners and without, with children and without, careers, tea, coffee, knitting, crochet, cats, dogs, machinery, eco feminism, exercise, women’s music, our Omas, and Grannies, and so on. Let’s talk about the women who gave of themselves for us, teachers and librarians, and crones in our communities. Talk about how strong our foremothers’ arms were, and how they kept space for us as best they could in a broken world.

Let’s pass the Bechtel test. Let’s show how our lives leave the Mako Mori test in the dust. And I propose doing it before Michfest. Let’s get this rig in GEAR!

Hell yeah

Do we have a tag for this? Because I think when we begin it, it will snowball.

Girls and women have Stories, and so many don’t get told. I want us to tell our stories and I want to have a tag for it.

Hmm.

I’d say #secretspaces, but if anyone has a better suggestion, please throw it on up here?

But seriously, I love the idea of setting up a hashtag for our stories–if we all told ours, and asked our elders to tell theirs. I think we could do some substantive good.

I’ll do it anyways, but I’d love the company!
